An Apparatus to Investigate Western Opera Singing Skill Learning Using Performance and Result Biofeedback, and Measuring its Neural Correlates

چکیده
We present our preliminary developments on a biofeedback interface for Western operatic style training, combining performance and result biofeedback. Electromyographic performance feedbacks, as well as formant-tuning result feedbacks are displayed visually, using continuously scrolling displays, or discrete post-trial evaluations. Our final aim is to investigate electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements in order to identify neural correlates of feedback-based skill learning.

The brain of opera singers: experience-dependent changes in functional activation.
Several studies have shown that motor-skill training over extended time periods results in reorganization of neural networks and changes in brain morphology. Yet, little is known about training-induced adaptive changes in the vocal system, which is largely subserved by intrinsic reflex mechanisms. We investigated highly accomplished opera singers, conservatory level vocal students, and laymen d...
متن کاملNeural correlates of professional classical singing
We evaluated cerebral activation maps of 43 subjects with respect to their classical singing skills. Professional opera singers, music conservatory vocal students, and medical students overtly sung parts of an Italian aria in a sparse sampling functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) experiment. Professional opera singers compared to medical students revealed increased activation in bilateral dorso...
متن کاملAutomatic Singer Identification For Improvisational Styles Based On Vibrato, Timbre And Statistical Performance Descriptors
Automatically detecting the singer by analyzing audio is a challenging task which gains in complexity for polyphonic material. Related approaches in the context of Western commercial music use machine learning models which mainly rely on low-level timbre descriptors. Such systems are prone to misclassifications when spectral distortions are present, since the timbre of the singer cannot be accu...
متن کاملThe Effects of Heart Rate Variability on Reading Performance among Iranian EFL Learners
Psychophysiological studies and MRI neuro-imaging findings provide evidence that heart rate variability (HRV) which is in control of our emotions affects our brain cognitive centers. It has been shown that coherent heart-brain interaction can change the pattern of the afferent cardiac input that is sent to the brain. For this purpose, the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) has proposed a kind of biof...
متن کاملBecoming and being an opera singer: Health, personality, and skills
The present thesis explores factors and processes associated with the artistic profession and development of opera singers. The profession of opera singers has a long story deriving its origin in early 1600s in Italy. What is performed on opera stages today is written in the musical scores in the 18 and 19th century. The question arises how the modern opera singers live, learn and excel in thei...
